1. Chemistry of metal complexes

4. Synthesis of the complexes with biomimetic activity

Ruthenium complexes have been shown to be compounds with good biological, thermal, electrical and catalytic properties that favor the examination of their chemistry. Today, chemistry of ruthenium complexes develops in two main directions. The first is the design and development of new broad-spectrum metallopharmaceuticals, while the second is the synthesis and application of highly efficient and selective catalysts.

Nucleic acids along with proteins are still considered the main targets of potentially biologically active substances. Therefore, investigation of the interaction of complexes with DNA is usually the first step in biological evaluation.

The development of the novel metal complexes with innovative structures and reactivity in different biological environments attracts huge attention, primarily due to an important role that metals play in various biochemical processes. The molecular design of many novel small inorganic metal complexes is, therefore, inspired by the structural features of the metalloenzyme active sites. These complexes are recognized as biomimetic, and are developed with an ultimate goal to translate structural resemblances with biological originals to the functional ones.

2. Chemical sensors and biosensors

1. Development of new (bio)sensors with electron-transfer mediators based on ruthenium complexes

The development of electrochemical sensors is one of the most propulsive areas of analytical chemistry since the sensors move the detection limits and allow the determination of the desired analyte in complex matrices. Of particular importance is the analytical determination of compounds that are part of the pharmaceutical compositions or represent biomolecules of interest in other fields of research, such as neurotransmitters, amino acids, nucleic acids etc. An effective electron transfer mediator is crucial for the development of new electrochemical sensors. Good electron transfer mediators include oxides of some metals that can occur in multiple oxidation states. In recent years a significant number of electrochemical sensors have been developed with metal complexes as mediators.
