Department of Physics is one of five Departments of the Faculty of Naturale Sciences of the University of Sarajevo. Its very beginnings can be traced to establishment of Faculty of Philosophy in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 1954. Department of Natural Sciences - the predecessor of Faculty of Natural Sciences - was initially part of Faculty of Philosophy. However, it was soon to became Faculty of Natural Sciences (1960) and move to new facilities (1964). See photo below.

Among the first teachers of physics in Bosnia and Herzegovina were professors Branko Galeb, Krunoslav Ljolje, Zdravko Stipčević, Dimitrije Čajkovski and Egvin Girt. They have not only thought physics and raised generations of physicists in Bosnia and Herzegovina but also established scientific teams devoted to physics research. The high quality of the physics studies in Bosnia and Herzegovina has been recognized by numerous scientific centers. In fact, many students of the Department of Physics became prominent members of the academic community. Some of them are professors Dejan Milošević, Damir Bečirević, Svjetlana Fajfer, Abdel Isaković, Zlatko Tešanovic and Ivana Vobornik.

The war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992—1995.) stalled the fast pace of development of physics in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Many professors and staff members left Sarajevo and Bosnia. And, some have been killed. The facilities have also been devastated. But, despite all that, the physics lectures have been delivered throughout the war.

The Department of Physics offers both undergraduate and graduate programs run by highly competent faculty members in a friendly environment.
